Mental Health Awareness Month: Tips and Tricks

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and in celebration, the experts at Marillac St. Vincent have put together a list of quick and easy tips and tricks to maintain your mental health. Mental health, like physical health, is something that has to be worked on consistently and here are a few ideas to get you started.

Get Up and Move

30 minutes of exercise a day can mitigate symptoms of anxiety, stress, and depression.

Gratitude Jar

Grab a cup or jar and each day add a note with one to three things you were grateful for that day. The more specific, the better. Regularly practicing gratitude can lead to more regulated mood and improves general appreciation.

Feel What You Feel

Let yourself experience your feelings. Your feelings are valid and must be acknowledged to be managed and worked through.

Breathe Deeply

Deep breathing is a helpful tool for mitigating anxiety. Take a deep breath in for five seconds, hold it for four, and let it out slowly for eight.

Listen to the Music

Music triggers emotions, memories, and thoughts that often lead to positive effects on mental health.

Consume Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Eating foods with high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids increases brain health and can improve depression and other disorders.


Sleep deprivation can negatively affect your mental health. Sleeping at least seven hours a night is ideal for both physical and mental health.

If you or anyone you know is struggling with mental health, don't hesitate to reach out for help. The Illinois Department of Human Services offers a free Help Line at 1-800-843-6154.
