The leaves are changing and so is the weather, but there is still time to have some socially distanced family fun. Check out this list brought to you by the family and youth experts at MSV to find activities and events that will keep you and the children in your life engaged.


Visit the Pumpkin Patch at Sonny Acres Farms

Tuesday through Friday; 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday; 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

310 North Ave, West Chicago, IL 60185

During September and October, the celebration of harvest time spreads from the city to the farm. Decorated with piles of pumpkins and various specialty squashes and gourds, Sonny Acres offers a fall display not often seen at any ordinary pumpkin patch.

Visitors will discover a Farm Fresh Market, Spook Shed, Halloween Costume & Gift Shop, carnival rides, food, and all sorts of fall displays and attractions. Explore With Children & Family Workshops at Chicago’s National Museum of Mexican Art

Saturday, October 17; 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Virtual Event

In addition to ongoing virtual tours at the museum, this online class will teach children about the Day of the Dead's cultural significance. Using various art supplies, students will create their own beautiful mini altar to display during Día de Muertos.

Admission is free, but with a $20 suggested donation, all materials needed, available for curbside pickup, will be included.

Take a Walk Down Scarecrow Trail

Morton Arboretum

Take a self-guided tour around the Morton Arboretum's Meadow Lake to see a zany collection of scarecrows created by local youth. Make a note of any standouts, because you will get to vote for your favorite scarecrow online!

Read a Book with a Local Celebrity

Virtual Event

Chicago Public Library’s Live from the Library Series partners with well-known personalities, authors, and sports stars to bring stories to life each week. Local celebrities read a childrens' book aloud every weekday to engage young readers from the comfort of their own home. Past celebrity readers have included Barack and Michelle Obama, actress, Jane Lynch, and Blackhawks players.

Attend Lincoln Square Ravenswood Apple Fest

Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4; 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

The 33rd annual Apple Fest is trading its normal roster of music performances and kids activities for a two-day farmers market stocked with plenty of fall produce along with virtual activities and deals from local businesses. Admission is free and tickets are not required.

Peacebook 2020 is a virtual symposium made for teen audiences featuring two free programs, Essential Perspectives and Visions of Peace. The symposium showcases young Chicago artists and activists premiering short new works about peace in the city.

A touring troupe of acrobats, tightrope walkers, aerialists, and jugglers will come together at Chicago’s Welles park for open-air shows this October.
