Marillac House Provides a Refuge for Children and Youth in the Wake of Extreme Violence.

CHICAGO, IL – In a city plagued with violence, simply walking to school can put children and youth in harm’s way.

With more than 1,000 shootings in Chicago this year alone, the community in Garfield Park is bracing for the worst as summer approaches and temperatures rise—conditions for which gun violence historically rises in the city.

The Chicago Police Department and Marillac St. Vincent Family Services’ Marillac House youth will ‘Play for Peace’, in a basketball matchup on June 24th at 6 p.m. The game will take place in the recently constructed Foglia Family and Youth Center at Jackson and Francisco.

Latoya Winters, who is featured in the CBS Evening News report, is now a youth worker for Marillac but started attending the Center’s after school and summer programs at age 6. She has experienced extreme violence her whole life. With the loss of family and loved ones to drugs and guns, Latoya’s first-hand experience allows her to relate to the youth she works with.

Each day there are countless children affected by the violence in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. However, Marillac House is providing a way out. As she prepares for her first term in DePaul University’s social work graduate program, Latoya is living proof of the change that is possible when kids are given the chance to thrive in a nurturing environment.
