Graduation at Marillac

On June 17th, Marillac celebrated the graduations of 40 students, including 10 from grade school, 24 from high school (including 7 teen mothers), and 6 from colleges. There were about 80 people in attendance.

The evening included a buffet dinner for the graduates and their families. The room was decorated to acknowledge the accomplishments of the graduates.  Michelle Howell lead our traditional candle lighting service. The 8th grade parents lit their child’s candle as a symbol they will be their support in high school, while the high school students lit their own.  While their parents looked on, the college students lit their own as a symbol of their future.

The night was very special. Five of the college graduates finished school in four years and are planning their futures. Myesha has joined the service so she can continue her science education. Jewel is going to begin a Masters Program in social work. Some of the colleges the high school graduates are going to attend include Columbia College, Illinois State University, and Clark Atlanta University.

These are just a couple examples of the successful paths these young people have chosen.  Michelle Howell and Maureen Hallagan spoke about how proud they are of each student and their confidence that they will go on to do great things. There was a lot of discussion about how they are proving that they are not just another statistic and that when they go into their new adventures, they can always come back home to Marillac.

Angela Moss, who participated in Hope Junior and Project Hope when she was younger, received her Bachelor degree, while also proudly celebrating the high school graduation of her daughter and the 8th grade graduation of her son. Charlotte Roberts, a school age teacher, received her Masters of Art in English and wrote a thesis titled “The Literary Merit of Rap Poetry, Rap as an original American Art Form.”

We are very proud of all our graduates and wish them all the success as they move on to new challenges and successes.
