Age is just a number
St. Vincent's Outreach Program recently received a generous donation from a young girl. Rebecca Christie and her daughter Emma, a student at St. Clement’s, used the opportunity of her 7th birthday party to request toiletry donations for St. Vincent's Outreach program.
Rebecca Christie was kind enough to share the experience in her words:
Collecting donations instead of gifts for Emma's 7th birthday seemed a great way to practice the concept of sharing with those in need. We are fortunate to attend a school and parish (St. Clement) that emphasizes the importance of community and serving others. When I asked the Director of Outreach at the parish for some guidance, she immediately identified the needs and contacts of organizations that are close to home. While Emma was a little uncertain of the idea of foregoing lots of presents, this vanished as she became excited and engaged in the process of choosing the item to collect, the baskets we would collect them in, sorting them after the party, and taking them to the center just a half mile down the road.
I think she will remember for a long time how good it felt to learn how her actions are going to make someone's day a little bit easier. We are so grateful to all her friends and family for their generosity as they made this such a rewarding experience!
And we are thankful to Rebecca and Emma, as well as their friends and family, for their generous donation and giving spirit. It is inspiring to witness such selflessness in a person so young. The donation included over 1,000 items, including soap, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, cotton swabs, shaving cream, razors, lotion, shampoos, and conditioners.
