Uncle Pete Legacy Lives On
Last May, Pete Zonsius, known affectionately as "Uncle Pete," passed away. He was a long-time volunteer and contributor to the Marillac community.
On January 1st, Chicago Tribune wrote about the dedication of a street in Uncle Pete's honor, as well as how his memory and good works have continued on.
Cars crossing from Waukegan to Harlem avenues in north suburban Niles often cut across Cleveland Avenue, where Peter Zonsius once lived. In the fall, the busy residential stretch behind St. John Brebeuf Catholic Church, where Zonsius worshipped, got a new name: Uncle Pete Way.
Uncle Pete. That's how everyone, including me, referred to the man who died in May. The honorary street name pays homage to the path he paved for the neighbors, parishioners and volunteers who have since taken the reins of his ministry.
