Today we broke ground on our
new Vince and Pat Foglia Family and Youth Center. With support from staff, community members,
donors, clients, volunteers, and our Board of Trustees, we celebrated the
beginning of the renovation for our Jackson Boulevard building. In order
to better accommodate the clients we serve through our programs and services,
our vision was to expand the existing building into a multi-purpose space
including a gymnasium and performing arts stage.
The day began with speeches from several members of our community. Sr. Patricia Dunne, D.C., Vice President of Mission Integration for Marillac St. Vincent Family Services, kicked off the celebration with a introduction and brief history of the Daughters of Charity, their impact on the city of Chicago, and their work through Marillac Social Center and St. Vincent de Paul Center. Fr. Dennis Holtschneider, C.M., President of DePaul University, then delivered the invocation that asked for prayers and blessings for the building and all whom work and utilize the space. Maureen Hallagan, Executive Director of Marillac Social Center, welcomed and thanked the crowd for their continued support in helping make this vision come true.
John Rowan, Board of Trustees Chair, spoke about the services Marillac Social Center offers and the additional programs and needs it will be able to provide with completion of the new family and youth center. Finally, Alderman Walter Burnett, State Senator Patricia Van Pelt, and State Representative Derrick Smith also talked about the impact of Marillac St. Vincent Family Services in the neighborhood and community. Following the speeches, attendees proceeded outside for the actual groundbreaking.
We had an impressive roster of individuals to help break ground on our new project, including: Bart Winters, president and chief executive officer of Marillac St. Vincent Family Services; Maureen Hallagan, executive director of Marillac Social Center; Carrie Callas, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul Center; Sr. Katie Norris, D.C., Board of Trustees
member; Sr. Patricia Dunne, D.C., Vice President of Mission
Integration; Illinois State Senator Patricia Van Pelt; Alderman Walter Burnett; Illinois State Representative Derrick Smith; Sr. Cathy Overmann, D.C., Marillac staff member; Betty Collins, long-time Marillac employee; Fred Hogan, Board of Trustees Vice Chair; Dorothy Jiganti, Board of Trustees Secretary; John Rowan, Board of Trustees Chair; and Sean Walsh, Walsh Construction.
Following the groundbreaking ceremony, children from the Hope Junior and Early Childhood Development programs performed for the crowd, drawing thunderous applause for their rousing appearances.
We would like to thank everyone for their continued support and generosity as we see the realization of our dream to provide increased services in a better space for those most in need to reach their greatest potential.
