28th Annual Hunger Walk

On an overcast Saturday morning, approximately 100 people gathered to raise funds for Marillac's food pantry as part of the 28th Annual Hunger Walk, hosted by the Greater Chicago Food Depository on June 29th. Marillac St. Vincent Family Services had a huge presence with two busloads of dedicated supporters, as well as our new sign. The Marillac team included food pantry recipients, volunteers, Hope Junior participants, and staff members from Marillac and St. Vincent's. One of the Hope Junior boys even got his picture taken with Governor Pat Quinn.

Marillac has raised almost $2,000 through individual donations and team participation. The Greater Chicago Food Depository deposits $12 into the food pantry for every walker, which enables us to purchase over 17,000 pounds of food for the food pantry.

We would like to thank Whitney Allen, director of Family Services, and our two Americorps volunteers, Austin and Keshia, for organizing the event. They worked hard to get such a large number of supporters. We were able to raise the funds for the Greater Chicago Food Depository, which in turn gives us the credit to receive food for our pantry. The food pantry continues to see an increase in the need for food every month.

Thanks to all staff, volunteers and children who walked. We were proud to be part of the 15,000 people who walked to raise money and awareness about the hunger crisis in Chicago.
