Countdown to Bike Ride Launch
Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 18th, St. Vincent de Paul Center will be hosting a bike parade in honor of the launch of A Bike Ride Somewhere Out of the Country. We recently shared with you the story of Bill and Jeff Kunkel, a father-son duo completing a 3,000-mile cross-country bike ride. Tomorrow, the pair will start their journey in San Diego, dipping their back tires into the Pacific Ocean. Over the next two months, the pair will travel from California to Florida, then upward to Hilton Head, South Carolina, dipping their front tires into the Atlantic Ocean.
At 10:30am tomorrow morning, children from the Early Childhood Development and School-Age programs at St. Vincent's will ride around Oz Park as a show of support and celebration for Bill and Jeff. We invite all to come out and help us mark the launch of such an impressive cross-country adventure.
Above you will find pictures from a visit from Bill and Jeff Kunkel last week. The pair met with the Pre-Kindergarten and School-Age children that are following their progress over the next two months.
As part of the experience, Bill and Jeff, long-time supporters and friends of the Centers, decided to raise funds for Marillac St. Vincent Family Services. Before the trip has even begun, the pair have already raised almost $20,000. As part of their fundraising efforts, Bill and Jeff will document their travels on a blog, as well as the websites for both Centers. In addition, classrooms at Marillac and St. Vincent’s will track their progress on large maps. Teachers are incorporating the trek into their classroom curriculums, including lessons on local geography, food and music, as well as art projects and computer instruction. In conjunction with the trip, the children will view their progress across the country through pictures and blog posts.
We invite to check back early and often to find updates about their extraordinary adventure and their fundraising efforts. We will have regular updates from Jeff and Bill, as well as stories about the classroom projects tied to the Bike Ride Somewhere Out of the Country. Jeff and Bill will be posting onto Facebook and Twitter, as well as answering questions and responding to comments left on the blog. We encourage to not only follow their journey, but also send positive thoughts and prayers their way as they undertake this adventure.
