Remembering Sister Mary Rita McSweeney

Sister Mary Rita McSweeney, a Remembrance by Chief Programs Officer, Maureen Hallagan.

The Marillac St. Vincent Family Services staff and clients are mourning the loss of Sister Mary Rita McSweeney. Sr. Rita was an amazing woman of faith who dedicated her life to education and service. Sister Rita was 78 and she became an Adrian Dominican Sister 59 years ago, devoting her life to serving God. She worked with the seniors at Marillac for 26 years after a 31 year career in elementary school education as a teacher and principal.

She fell in love with working with seniors from the first day that she walked into Marillac. In the 24 years, I have had the honor of working with this strong woman of such great faith, I have been inspired. She loved her homebound seniors and her Take Charge Seniors. She always had a smile on her face even through rough times. Sr. Rita's mantra was "I have the best job in the world." She ended all of her phone conversations with her seniors saying, “I love you!” She impacted so many seniors, keeping them active with so many activities and adventures. She had an intimate knowledge of each of them and their families.

I have loved working with Sr. Rita professionally, but she has taught me so much personally. I have learned that it is important to have faith in everyone you meet and that there is good in everyone. On a bad day, have faith that you will get through it, and remember that someone else might be having a worse day. A smile goes a long way in making people feel special, and most importantly, that you never know when a good deed might make a difference in someone's life.

Sr. Rita loved life. She was always up for a good time. She loved her fellow sisters, her family, the seniors, staff and the community. She was able to demonstrate her love of God in all of her daily actions.

Sr. Rita will be greatly missed but she leaves an amazing legacy at Marillac that will live on forever.

Thank you Sr. Rita for being you and sharing and teaching all of us some of life’s most cherished lessons. We love you and are so blessed to have had you in our lives.
