St. Vincent's recently launched a new yoga program. The program was created based on a Leader Fellowship award won by Christy Lyons, a final semester Master’s in Industrial & Organizational Psychology candidate at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Christy is passionate about wellness & has been in the industry for over 7 years, at one point even owning her own studio. As her focus shifts in her career, it was clear that it was finally time to give back to Chicago’s youth with a wellness program for underserved children. With gym class & PE activities among the first cut for budgets, Chicago Public Schools & other underserved students lack a fitness education and stress coping techniques. It is hoped that this pilot program for the children at St. Vincent's can serve as an example and perhaps even expand to similar centers throughout the city to provide all children will an opportunity to learn about health, fitness, yoga & stress management.
The program will run from mid-January until the end of April, with the potential for longer term. Classes run from 3:30-4:15 pm & 4:30-5:15 pm on Mondays & Tuesdays only with older children from the School Age program. Volunteers will be teaching subjects such as Yoga for Athletes, Hip Hop Yoga, and Salsa Dancing. We are excited for this new collaboration and look forward to see the results!
