Participants from Marillac's After School Matters group, as well as 8 other After School Matters programs, performed in an event, "Versed: The Central Region Poetry Set," on July 29th. The event was hosted by Brenda "Mama" Matthews and focused on celebrating community. Each group had the opportunity to create their own set, comprised of music, poetry, and dance, to "Speak Life" and discuss making positive contributions to the community. 180 After School Matters teen participants shined in the poetic and theatrical performances.
In addition, the event was open to the community at large, with an additional 150 people watching the entertainment. Children from Marillac's summer camps and from Altgeld Park enjoyed the opportunity to watch the artistic displays and creative performances. The Family Focus Video program from After School Matters also recorded the event, conducting a series of interviews about the impact of the After School Matters summer program.
The event was a great way to showcase the hard work and dedication of the After School Matters participants and a venue for them to enjoy the fruits of their hard labor. We congratulate all of the participants for a wonderful event!
