Week of the Young Child

During the week of April 15-19, the staff at Marillac Social Center and St. Vincent de Paul Center celebrated NAEYC's "Week of the Young Child." Each day of the week had a separate theme and activities, including a story bus, a petting zoo, a carnival, and a Literacy Day. The Centers had a schedule full of activities to entertain and educate the children. Parents and family members also participated throughout the week, including facilitating classroom projects, wearing special pins, helping compile family books, assisting with supplies, and sharing a family breakfast.

Highlights of the week included Early Childhood Literacy Day. Preschoolers at Marillac read and acted out stories for the toddler rooms. The toddlers in Rooms 3 and 4 also presented to the other children. All in attendance remarked how great the children were. Thanks to all the teachers who worked hard to give them the confidence to get up in front of others and perform.

Other celebrations included a petting zoo and story bus at St. Vincent’s. The StoryBus told the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, helping foster a love of reading for the children. The week ended with a carnival around the Center. Children enjoyed face painting, created a life-size mural, made their trail mix, participated in an obstacle course, and tried their hand at some carnival games.

The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by NAEYC. The purpose of the Week of the Young Child is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

Founded in 1926, The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is the world's largest organization working on behalf of young children with nearly 80,000 members, a national network of more than 300 state and local Affiliates, and a growing global alliance of like-minded organizations.
