Playing Around with the Blackhawks

On March 27th, 50 children from the School Age Program at St. Vincent de Paul Center enjoyed a special treat when members of the Blackhawks organization, including current player Jimmy Hayes, stopped by.  As part of the Streethawks program, run by the National Hockey League, the Blackhawks visit youth and community organizations to teach children between the ages of 6-16 about hockey.  Besides having an NHL player on hand, the children also enjoyed a visit from Congressman Mike Quigley, the man responsible for connecting St. Vincent de Paul Center with the Streethawks program.

As part of the lesson, children learned how to properly handle a hockey stick, basic drills and ball-handling skills. Jimmy Hayes, Congressman Quigley, and representatives of the organization led the children in individual and group practices.  Congressman Quigley shared his love of hockey with the crowd, noting his lifelong dedication to the sport.  He still finds time to play today, even with his busy schedule. He also noted that he has played with fellow politicians and spoke about conversations he has had with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama about his love for the sport. He shares their belief that exercise is an important part of daily life, especially for youth.

In addition to leading drills, Jimmy Hayes and Congressman Quigley took the time to take pictures, autograph t-shirts, and meet with all the children.  The organization also provided Blackhawks t-shirts for everyone, as well as hockey sticks, pucks, and protective gear to the children can incorporate their lessons for a long time to come. We are thankful to the National Hockey League, the Streethawks program, the Chicago Blackhawks, and Congressman Quigley for making this dream come true.
