Guest Speaker for Conference on Aging

December 12-14, 2012 brought the 31st Annual Illinois Governor’s Conference on Aging to Chicago. The Governor’s Conference is the premier Illinois event for everyone in the aging network to learn and share with each other.

This year, Kathy Sloverwas asked by City colleagues to join with them in presenting a session on Intensive Case Advocacy and Support, work which is supported by our Community Development Block Grant. Of the 19 delegate agencies, St. Vincent’s was the only one asked to speak.

The panel focused on explaining elder abuse and neglect, how self-neglect is defined and assessed, and what partnering agencies do to successfully intervene in such cases to help stabilize seniors. We do this through establishing a relationship with the self-neglecting seniors, assisting them in understanding the problems and issues they face, educating them about alternatives and services, helping seniors accept services, advocating for needed services with other providers, and monitoring services.

There was a large, attentive audience for this session, with good questions and positive feedback. Kathy said that it was an honor to be able to speak about St. Vincent’s senior service work in such a public forum!
